New Laser Scan Detects Breast Cancer Faster Than Mammogram
New Laser Scan Detects Breast Cancer Faster Than Mammogram
by Wochit 19 June 2018
According to UPI, researchers at Caltech developed a new breast cancer screening method. Instead of relying on mammograms to identify cancerous cells, Caltech engineers used a laser to scan for tumors.. The method uses near-infrared lasers to pulse light into breast tissue, rendering an image of the breast's internal vascular structure. The new method works so fast, researchers at Caltech can detect tumors within 15 seconds, compared to 45 minutes for MRI scans. Lihong Wang, a professor of medical and electrical engineering at Caltech said they wanted to develop a fast screening method that didn't harm the patient.
